Water coming in?
Leaking right now? Do these four things
- Stay off the roof. Wet shingles and slate are dangerous, and the leak can wait for a tarp.
- Protect the room. Move what you can, and shut off power to any wet light fixture.
- Drain a bulging ceiling. A small hole lets the water out in one place.
- Take photos. Your insurance company will want to see the damage.
What goes into a roof built for Pittsburgh
Our winters melt and refreeze over and over, which pushes water up under shingles. Every layer here has a job.
- Architectural shingles The surface you see. Nailed to the pattern that keeps the wind warranty.
- Synthetic underlayment A second water barrier across the whole deck.
- Ice and water shield A self-sealing membrane at eaves and valleys, where ice dams push water uphill.
- Roof deck The boards or sheathing. Anything soft is replaced before we build back up.
- Drip edge and gutter Metal at the edge sends water into the gutter, not behind the fascia.
- Soffit and ridge vents Air in low and out high keeps the attic cold in winter.

Questions people ask roofers
What is ice and water shield?
A self-adhering rubberized asphalt sheet that goes under the roofing where water backs up, along the eaves and in valleys. Under the building code Pennsylvania uses as of 2026, where ice dams are a known local problem, it runs from the roof edge to at least 24 inches inside the outside wall.
What causes black streaks on a roof?
Mostly algae carried in the air, not dirt or soot. Owens Corning says it hasn't seen the algae affect how shingles perform, and shingles with copper in the granules resist it. Don't pressure wash it, since that strips the granules.
Should I repair or replace my roof?
If the damage is in one area and the shingles are still flexible, repair it. If shingles are brittle or curling and leaks keep moving, plan on replacing it. See our repair or replace guide.
Does homeowners insurance cover roof replacement?
If a covered event like wind, hail or a falling tree damaged the roof, often yes. Age and wear usually aren't covered. See our insurance guide.
Should flashing be replaced with new roof?
Where it is rusted, damaged or worn, yes. Pennsylvania's building code, as of 2026, says flashings, edgings and vents must be replaced on a reroof where they are rusted, damaged or deteriorated, and new flashing must follow the maker's instructions.
What questions to ask a roofer?
Ask about full tear-off, ice and water shield, new flashing, a per-sheet deck price, proof of insurance, written warranty and who will be on your roof.
Do roofers offer financing?
Many do. Ask us when we quote, and we will go over the options for your job.
Do I need a permit for a new roof?
It depends on the municipality and scope, and as of 2026 the rules still differ across Allegheny County. We check before we start and handle any permit the job needs.
